Eric Walker is an artist from the UK who recently released 9 Lives. The EP contains five songs all which contain ukulele. Walker has a good voice and obviously sings from the heart. I thought his lyrics were well written and the melodies were memorable.
The songs are extremely sparse and interchangeable. He strums each song almost the exact same way making his vocals the differentiating factor in the music. I really thought some additional instrumentation would have helped with making each song stick out. At least change up the tempo and strumming style.
When Walker is in a comfortable octave range he really excels. In fact I thought he was comparable to Morrissey which in my opinion and many others is one of the best vocalists around. That being said he does occasionally get off key going into higher octaves.
He opens with the title track. His lyrics are slightly poetic but also pretty straightforward. I wouldn't exactly call his lyrics ambiguous. The vocal harmonies work well and overall the song was enjoyable but felt a bit long.
As I listened to the remaining songs I have to admit it was really hard to feel separation between them. It hard for me to pick out the highlights. On the plus side none of the songs were duds. The best advice I can give to Walker is to try and find a way to mix it up whether it's from the performance or the production. This is the same issue I often see with someone with just a guitar and vocals. You want people to listen to your EP or album from beginning to end and I promise even a little bit of variation can go a long way.
Walker has talent; that's not the question. I just think at this point he has a lot more potential. I look forward to where he goes from here
