Erik Dismembered is an artist from Hot Springs, AR who recently released an album entitled Darkness Within. He makes slightly experimental music that will appeal to a niche audience. The music will keep you engaged and shows some promise but his vocals are once in awhile so hyperbolic it results in comedy. His vocals go from a fictional demon character in Lord of The Rings to a soft-spoken whisper. It’s like he is changing characters during the song, which is mildly entertaining if nothing else.
Darkness Within opens with one of the most successful songs entitled “A Deal ft Chase Finished.” His vocals are heavily distorted and he does his best to sound like he is a demon burning in hell. The music isn’t exactly what you what expect which was a good move. He throws in distorted guitar but the cascading synth and beat give it a clubby, electronic feel.
The next song “Anxiety” starts off with cosmic pads and a deep, rumbling percussion. The lyrics are descriptive, dark and confessional. He says, ”Losing my grip, sometimes it seems easier to just let go, I could settle back into addiction but what the fuck would that prove? The feelings begin to ease, grasping for this fucked up idea I have of control.”
“Diamond Eyes” revolves around acoustic guitars and orchestral pads. He talks his way through this song and I could only make out about half of what he was saying. Either way his delivery is overly dramatic not unlike that of someone like Jamie Stewart from Xiu Xiu.
“Darkness Within” showcases some inventiveness with his music while with “Desecration Of A Corpse” he does a better impression of an undead zombie knight better than most video games. “Weary Hearts” creates a whimsical atmosphere for him to talk and whisper in.
I couldn’t take the talking, whispering and growling seriously at times and I think others will feel the same way. It’s so over the top and I wonder how the artist feels about it. The truth is when I listen to artists like Prurient, Xiu Xiu, Pharmaon and Scott Walker I often feel the same way and that's part of the allure. Although Walker seems to pull off the dark, absurd vibe the best. Erik Dismembered isn’t on the same level as these dark experimental acts but he shows some skill when it comes to composition. He has a knack for connecting disparate elements which is a rare skill.
