Everything But The Everything is a project by a solo artist who calls himself Izzy The Gent on his website. Last year I reviewed Dream and he is now back with a new EP entitled Rockn Roll Is A Feeling. The EP contains four songs and four different singers giving it a bit of a mixtape type of quality.
The first song is entitled “Intimacy” which features Luke Sweeney on vocals. I loved the initial riff of the song which sounds somewhere close to the Pixies. As the song progresses it becomes synth heavy with pads that create some atmosphere. The song drives and the chorus is really catchy. I would say some of the most memorable melodies were on this song. It’s a pretty straightforward song in terms of structure but a fun and fairly short ride.
The next song is called “Can’t Allow” which has a couple different things going on. I thought the riff sounded very post-punk at first. It reminded me of Joy Division although a little more amped up. The vocalist Tobias Hawkings has a vocal style that sounded very ’80s to me. His vocals are covered in this sort of stressed emotive quality that I noticed on the verse. Overall, the vocals sound good, especially the bridge around two-minutes-and-fifteen-seconds mark.
We are greeted with the first female vocalist on “The Story.” “The Story” features Sophia Prise and she has what I would call rock vocals. She reminded me of some of the great female singers from the ’70s and '80s. The bass line is really killer on this track.
Last up is “Jump” which features Vacances. The vibe is also post-punk inspired and somewhere between The Cure and Joy Division. It’s a catchy song and I loved the darker chorus. The bass line is again just killer and drives.
My only critique was the mixes felt a little narrow at times. I felt the instrumentation could have been separated better creating a wider stereo field. That being said the mixes are still solid and the lo-fi aesthetics work for the more raw rock songs.
Overall, I would say this is a great EP and a very welcome addition to his discography. Recommended.
