I really enjoyed listening to Fallen Suns self-titled debut. It was almost a given though. I’m a huge fan of grunge and Soundgarden and Alice In Chains and heard the similarities right away. Suffice it to say this is music for fans of grunge. One thing I will say is the band occasionally gets into metal territory but so did the aforementioned bands.
There are multiple reasons why this album worked for me because trust me there are a lot of bands out there that are still trying to replicate this sound. Reason number one is the band can turn on a dime. The performances are always in the pocket and sound pro. I’m sure these guys tear it up live. Reason number two is the stellar production. I love DIY and occasionally embrace the aesthetics for certain genres. That being said I’m sure artists are not getting these type of results recording in our buddys moms basement with an outdated version of Ableton and a couple waves plugins. You can feel the energy on these songs and it bursts through the speakers with authority. The band has no time for ballads. They hit the pavement with no warning on “Break Me” and comparisons to Soundgarden maybe most evident here. The song was somewhere between “Rusty Cage” and “Spoonman”. The band sounds a little less influenced on “Wolves” and continues to bring the balls to the walls intensity. I found it slightly funny and fitting every song comes in with the full band rocking out hard. The band has absolutely no fat on these songs and doesn't seem to give a damn about buildups in the beginning of songs. It’s a little difficult to bring up highlights because all the songs were well written. Fallen Suns is a very cohesive album. It's a huge issue I talk about with a lot of bands. Fallen Suns is an album that is focused and it really pays off in that you know what this band's style is. There is no confusion. If you have been reading and listening you should know Fallen Suns is for fans of hard rock, grunge, metal, etc. Enjoy.
