self-released; 2017

4.0 out of 5

By Jamie Funk

FIONA started writing and studying music since she was eleven. When she moved to Sheffield, UK she studied music at university. In recent years she has been exploring her artistic angle and seems like some of her music deals with topics such as social change and mental health.

Her exceptional five-song EP Right Now is highly enjoyable and also creates a solid foundation for her to build on. The songs are acoustic based melding elements of folk and soul into singer/songwriter vibe. Right Now is not pushing limits or taking many artistic chances but the songs are well delivered and written.

The instruments all sound warm and inviting but make no mistake about it that the vocals are at the center. She has a soulful dynamic voice that I appreciated within ten seconds of hearing it.The EP opens with the title track which could easily be the single. It opens with a guitar and bass. Her vocals are warm when she sings, “Standing on the platform looking through glass, I could not ask for anything more, But today, like all good things, has too soon come to pass, And now we're right back where we were before.” As the song progresses vocal harmonies and percussion come into the picture. Once the hook hits you will know it. The song is smooth and infectious.

FIONA has continued success with “Never Here.” The lyrics are ambiguous and poetic. She sings, “Soft sea that I could sleep at the bottom of, Tell me is it that you think you're not good enough.” The songs builds on a similar palette of sounds as the title track.

It’s arguable but “Name Your Price” may be the highlight. Her vocal performance is truly exceptional on this song. Her voice is dynamic and every nuance is full of emotion. My ears were happy.

I was again interested and intrigued by the lyrics on “Complete Collection.” She avoids cliches and is able to capture poignant sentiment without being saccharine. She sings, “Pages turning, encased in your arms, Your words falling from your heart.”.She closes with a slightly more upbeat song entitled “Just A Girl” and goes five for five.

FIONA is a great musician; there is just no denying that. I think the only thing I would like to hear a little bit more of is experimentation. I don’t say that in an abstract way - I just think this style is very popular at the moment and I want to see how else she can stick out from the crowd.

Overall, I enjoyed Right Now from beginning to end. Don’t miss out on this one.
