Flight is Scott Abene (guitar), Scott Deardon (guitar), Tony Puleo (bass) and Sal Demetrio (drums). The band released Simulator which is an instrumental progressive rock album in the spirit of acts like Joe Satriani, King Crimson and Rush. Suffice it to say if you are a fan of the genre you will eat up what this album has to offer.
They open with “Spirit” which is the most experimental and arguably unique track in the batch. The song blends what sounds like distant chants, numerous percussive elements like bongos and snare with some bass and guitar. It’s almost as if each instrument is doing its own thing here. I wasn’t quite prepared for the intensity that comes with “Liquid” after the opener. The music is fast and heavy and comes without warning. It doesn't take long for you to realize how talented the band is from a technical perspective. They squeeze a lot of content into the song’s time frame. “Earth” opens with bongos, lead guitar and bass and it is probably unintentional that the music has a worldly vibe to it. There are also some parts that rock out hard. “Succendo” was one of my favorites. There is a clear prog rock ’80s flavor on this song that fans of RUSH will appreciate. The band is just getting started. There is plenty to appreciate in terms of technical prowess and creative possibilities on songs like “Air,” “D” and “Sea.” The band ends with the twenty-minute epic “Elements” which I decided to take on completely separately than the rest of the album. My only issue was that the album was really long. If you are someone like me who prefers to listen to an album from beginning to end this is no easy feat simple because of the run time. Overall, this album delivers in terms of instrumental, progressive rock. Take a listen.
