Paul Holden (vocals/guitar), Dave Pemberton (guitar), Shaun Stolk (bass) and Jack Eddie (drums) are Foot. The band recently released a six-song self-titled album. This is an album that's covered in reverb and fuzz. The aesthetics are essential to this sound which is between shoegaze and drone metal.
What you have here are sheets of white noise made from the guitars while heavily reverb-laced vocals merge with fuzz. The vocals could hardly be considered the focal point of the music. It’s like they are just another element that contributes to the sound rather then the element that garnered your attention. I personally love these textures and tones. They wash over you and the feeling is somehow serene and heavy.
They open with “Rupert Turdoch.” Ha I get it. I get what they did there. Suffice it to say if you enjoy this album you will enjoy everything that follows. I would give it some time if you aren't accustomed to this style of music. Absorb it and let it sit. There is some beauty in there but it may take some patience to find it.
Drone metal acts such as Sunn O))) and shoegaze seem to be an influence here but you can also hear traces of bands like Alice In Chains. You can hear what I'm talking about on “Ribs.” The band continues to showcase their comedic talent when it comes to song titles with “Hulk Brogan.” It starts off slow as you work your way through a swamp and as the song progresses the band stomps out some intense groove not just sheets of noise. “Dahl” might be my personal favorite, The song is not only catchy but I thoroughly enjoyed the dreamy psych rock sequence in there .
They close with “Gunning For Your Heart” which is short but powerful. I was reminded of the vocalist Ian Brown from The Stone Roses on this track.
Foot is a great debut for fans of fuzz in general. There is surely a niche audience who will appreciate this album. I sure did.
