Lenny Costa (vocals/guitar), Ty Garcia (vocals/guitar), Alex Wechter (bass), and Lucas Garcia (drums) are Forever For a Second. The four-piece band released an emo/pop-punk album entitled A Lesson Learned in 2014 which is still getting a lot of praise.
The album starts with a forty-three second introduction before launching into "Goodbyes and Trying Times.” Right away you can hear the tropes of pop punk and emo from the vocal delivery to the lyrics. There is no doubt the music has that angsty yet rebellious teenage vibe that will resonate with a young audience. You can hear shades of bands like Jimmy Eat World, New Found Glory and a myriad of other bands that sound similar. "Goodbyes and Trying Times" is indicative of the style the band plays for the remainder of the album. The band hits the target with the next song “Conversations." There is no denying the band is tight especially the drummer, and the vocal harmonies are strategically placed. Lyrically the song revolves around the typical post relationship stuff that young people lament about. The band has more success with "Burning the Candle at Both Ends". It's another fairly straightforward song relying on abrasive, distorted guitars and metronome-like drumming. It's also one of the catchier songs on the album. "The Mess We've Made" is perhaps the most standard pop punk style song from singing about feeling alive on a certain night to the nasally vocals. The guitar work on this song is exceptional. "At a Loss for Words" is the band's ballad. The song contains a lot of atmosphere and relies on mostly guitar and vocals. The song predictably goes big and epic towards the end which seemed obvious from the start. They close with “Die Alive” which is another softer ballad type song that felt like a logical ending. I can’t say Forever For a Second is reinventing the wheel with this album. What I can say is they do this style of music justice and have some well-written songs.
