3.4 out of 5

By Eva Cantillo

Recently re-united band has come together to create their first EP under the name Founders. Music found within this release can be compared to rock punk bands like Fall Out Boy and A.F.I. Based out of Philadelphia, the band seems to have experienced a rebirth with the formation of their newly founded band, this time around the four-piece band wants to take a more serious approach and evolve their music to the next level.

“Mystique” is the opening track on the album and it starts off with an unsuspecting and calculating guitar and keyboard track. Then the lyrics say “Hey there green eyed girl staring across the room. Do you mind if I come over and sit next to you?” This song is totally a pickup line transformed into a pop rock ballad. What I find really interesting is the addition of the Spanish language into some of the lyrics, it was really unexpected but played well into the character of the song.

Following along, the next song “270 & Counting,” starts off a bit slower before the vocals and guitars are all in your face. “Do you ever feel so insecure? The pain you feel that you deserve? Never do it for me, but for somebody else.” As the song goes on it becomes catchy and the guitars always seem to come up with a new chord to catch on to.

“Kona Blues” begins with a beachy surf rock sound and then the matching lyrics “I wanna feel the sunburn. Man, I'd kill to feel anything. To distract me from anxiety,” makes that landscape very real. This is a song that can be categorized as “emo,” it has depth and emotion and is a nice break in between Founders' super speedy and energized songs.

The rock music found within The EP can be called emo rock, or punk pop rock. There is a lot of vocals that anchor the songs and on almost every track this aspect comes across in the forefront. This is a great album for anyone interested in the genre; the songs are dynamic, entertaining, offer depth and clarity, and are well-recorded and mixed.
