From the Start comprised of Brian Nauss (Guitar/Vocals) Andy Lechner (Guitar/Vocals) Jake Larson (Bass) Matthew Pieper (Drums/Vocals) are a Chicago band who recently released an EP entitled Nautical Disasters.
Right off the bat I was into this band when I heard the track "We Are Who We Are". I was reminded of a numbers of bands off Touch and Go records as well as one of the most underrated bands in the last decade - Les Say Fav. I think the element that had me was the dueling guitar work. They really click and know how to play off each other. That being said the vocals, bass and drum work was nothing to snuff at either. I was hoping the opening track was indicative of what else I could expect. They deliver with "Colder" which has an almost comically long build up. The pay off is well worth it when the whole band explodes. After that moment the song is a dynamic ride of tension and release. The song doesn't overstay its welcome and wraps up in about two and a half minutes. Up next is the arguable centerpiece entitled "This Situation". The song has a copious amount of changes and more kudos to the guitarists. They absolutely kill it. I haven't heard such fantastic double lead guitar since Pretty Girls Make Graves. "Uncle Bob" is a little more pop oriented. It's catchy and probably the best pick for a single. "Used To Be Friends" is another success. The way the bass, guitar and drums work together during the beginning of the song is so on point. I should also point out I thought this was a great vocal performance. They close with "Late Last Night" which doesn't disappoint. The band brings the goods with riff after riff of engaging sounds. On thing that has to be pointed out is how good the production is. The recording quality is great but more importantly fits the style of music. Overall, Nautical Disasters is a great EP. The songwriting is top notch and the guitar work is some of the best I have heard in recent memory.
