George Beck is a London based singer/songwriter who was the founder of a dance/new wave project called Afterparty. The collaboration between him and other producers, DJ’s and artists took off and apparently there were a couple of notable hits that came to fruition because of that process.
After Afterparty he took some time off but the creative itch was there again. The relief would be with a solo effort entitled Different Groove. It’s a five-song EP which mixes elements of R&B, electronic and more.
The programming/production was solid and it had a distinct ’90s feel to me. Suffice it to say the production was not the most inventive I have heard in 2017. The beats felt pretty straightforward but were slick and served the the focal point which was the vocals.
Beck mentions that his previous project was involved in new wave and I can see why. His vocals have an aesthetic that fits that genre. His vocal style works very well here as well. I was groovin' to the vocal melody on “Change” which is dynamic, passionate and easy on the ears.
“The Incompatibles” is the single and is dark, catchy and even danceable. The hooks are there and I especially enjoyed the sub-bass on this song. Up next is “Dancing To A Different Groove” which in all honesty didn't feel like a different groove but an R&B groove from the ’90s. That's not the case with “Paranoid” which has a more jagged, experimental approach while the “People Move On” is the slower ballad that is more emotionally resonant and nostalgic.
Different Groove has five solid songs. Beck is a good vocalist which really made the songs work for me. That and the fact the melodies are palatable and catchy. Recommended.
