George Shuter is a singer/songwriter from Liverpool, UK, who recently released his sophomore effort entitled Defining Moments. It contains an eclectic mix of genres from punk, rock, and pop to name a few. There were certainly some genres that seemed to fit him better but there are also no songs which feel like completely failed attempts.
The album opens with the title track. The song is one of Shuter’s strengths. It’s a fast punk-based song relying on power chords and catchy vocal melodies. His voice sounds very good here between the distortion and the hard-hitting drums. That being said he does sometimes have a nasally inflection to his delivery but it works well in this situation. Shuter continues to find success with “Chesca Mae!” which is another fast paced song relying on power chords and distortion. The music feels more punk than his voice and I don’t say that in a bad way. In fact the delivery sometimes reminded me of Morrissey. “Summertime” veers towards a ‘90s alternative band. He starts away from the intense distortion and goes for something a little more melodic here. After an enjoyably short acoustic song entitled “Old Money” Shuter goes into another song that reminded me of The Smiths called “Chesca Mae II.” The one misfire on the album was “New Money.” There was something about his vocal delivery here that wasn’t working out as well and you could make the case that the song is a bit cheesy when he delivers lines like “dreams were never easy to achieve.” Luckily Shuter gets back on track with songs like “Chapters” and “Innocent Bystander.” Overall, Defining Moments has some mishaps but also has some inspired moments. As long as Shuter can focus on his strengths and realize what they are then he should be well on his way.
