Linecker Da Silva and Joe Ziemba are the two members of Gideon Pidgeon. The band members started working together in 2016 and released a five song self-titled EP. It’s lo-fi effort that showcases some potential. Each song has a pretty different feel which doesn’t build much of foundation for the duo and also makes it hard to label what kind of music they play.
They open with “So Far” which has 60’s pop/rock vibe to it. I was somewhat reminded of The Beatles. The vocalist has some issues staying key that were noticeable but still enjoyed the vocal performance. The best part of the song is the Neutral Milk Hotel style breakdown where they introduce horns and slow down the song Next up is “Down” which is solid rock/blues tune but was also pretty standard stuff. The lyrics read like a poem. He sings “Cold hands Dry skin She walks alone Cold soul Dark heart She tries to eat, But there's no meat." The band's style starts to shift considerably with the third song "Free." It's extremely melancholy, full of despair, eerie and atmospheric. The emotional leap from the first two songs felt pretty vast. The vocals needed some treatment. They sounded thin and it doesn't sound like a pop filter was used. The first four minutes move slowly and revolve around the main vocal melody. I thought the song may have been more effective at around two minutes. The band makes another considerable shift with the atmospheric and serene "A New You". The get into post-rock territory and do it justice. "A New You" is the arguable highlight They have some resemblance to one of my favorite bands Do Make Day Think. They close with a low energy song entitled “Different” which worked as a closer. Gideon Pidgeon has some talent they just need a little bit of focus. They are all over the place and avoid any type of signature sound. A bit of a boost in production couldn't hurt either. These guys just started and was impressed by what they pulled off. Now they just need to hone in on who they are as a band.
