Giovanni Mallia is a twenty-six year old artist from Toronto who recently released a four-song EP entitled Devil In The Morning Ep. He has been recording and writing songs since he was thirteen. Devil In The Morning Ep is a lo-fi effort that flirts with various genres.
He opens with “Devil in the Morning” which is a guitar based song. The vocal delivery varies from feeling hyperbolic at times like when he says “I can see your culture” to a more natural sounding delivery. The song is a highlight. It's catchy, a bit silly and was the most original sounding to me. Up next is “Party Night” which has a very different vibe. It's a more electronic, club worthy track and a style that has been very popular the last five years or so. The song is unequivocally catchy but very familiar sounding. “Also Known as You” goes for a more subdued indie pop vibe. The best part are his vocal melodies but the music is also strong revolving around synths, guitars, bass and sparse percussion. He closes with a heavy hitting track entitled “Telephone (Write it Down).” There is a good, upbeat energy to the song. The songs felt a little self contained and the production could have used a more professional sheen but the EP was still enjoyable. I think the next logical step would be to figure how to improve the recording quality. The music he makes thrives in hi fidelity. Overall, this is a solid EP. All four songs were well delivered even if the styles felt different.
