Giulio Beltramo is an artist from Cape Town, Africa who recently released Upside Down Inside Out. Beltramo who has played for regional, national and international orchestras, ensembles and choirs, has a classical background. That being said he establishes himself as a singer/songwriter on Upside Down Inside Out.
The album is around thirty-two minutes long and is filled to the brim with quality songs. It didn’t take me long to appreciate his vocal work which is consistently backed with top-notch songwriting.
The album opens with an exceptional track called “Endless Time” which is upbeat, fun and full of hooks. On the chorus he sings “people walking in slow motion” and it was specifically that line that made me addicted to the chorus. He sings about our ephemeral existence and it’s a pretty heavy subject but it works perfectly against the music.
He has more success with “Reality” which is stripped back and also where I took more notice of his voice. “Reality” also meditates on our temporary existence as well as undetermined future. It’s hands down a beautiful song that avoids feeling melodramatic and saccharine when it easily could have been. Up next is “Upside Down Inside Out” which is a piano lead song while “Seek and Find” contains impressive piano work, tons of hooks and is arguably the most dynamic song on the album. “With You” features Lauren Norstrom who has a great voice but was perhaps a little overpowering in the mix when they harmonize. Either way they sounded great together.
“Reminds Me of When” demonstrates his ability to bring up philosophical questions as well as existential dread without the heaviness that sometimes comes along with it. The penultimate track “Hit the Ground” might be the most chipper sounding song on the album before going into the tranquil and serene “Conclusive Revolution.”
Beltramo is an all around exceptional musician. This album was a little top heavy for me with the first two songs being ones I favorited and will be revisiting often. On that note there aren’t any songs that I would skip or pass over. This a great release. Two thumbs up.
