Last year we reviewed Pun by Graphics on Televisions. The duo consisting of Ryan Morris (keyboards, vocals) and Micah Gettys (cajon, drums, vocals) provide a pretty good description on their Bandcamp page of what they sound like. “An instrumental keys & percussion duo influenced by jazz and ‘80s video games.” The music they make often feels sparse and minimal. That being said the music is enjoyable if not particularly meaty.
I’m not sure how the idea developed but Pun has been remixed and covered by a wide array of different artists and has been appropriately titled Another Pun. Suffice it to say the songs are more eclectic and their is a lot more instrumentation this time around fleshing out some of the songs in engaging and unique ways. Out of the batch there were a couple that really stuck out. “Icicle” was a song that received a substantial energy upgrade. The song was covered by §teinberg and he not only makes it his own but also adds elements that make it feel like a whole new experience. He incorporates a zig-zagging type bass line and intricate percussion that is pure ear candy. The song soars in way that the original version never did. “Drawing Game” now has an indie rock feel that can draw comparisons to a band like Menomena. The song has an intensity that wasn’t as apparent in the original version. Arguably the most dramatic conversion and best reinventing of a song goes to Mayor of Donutville for "The First Word.” The song contains fantastic guitar work, vocal harmonies and has a hint of calypso. It pretty rare that you find a remix album that is more enjoyable than the original but I have to say that is one of those times. Other than the songs feeling inconsistent, which is expected the album is otherwise an exceptional piece of work. Highly Recommended.
