Have To Have is a band comprised of Julián Berdegué, Jonathan More, Dominic Neri and Mitch Stuart. They recently released their debut Obscuriosity. To put it simply this sounds like a number of young guys getting together, having fun and playing music. It’s not a new concept and this idea and practice was part of my own life through all of my twenties and most of my thirties. It’s a ritual that I hope doesn't end anytime soon although it seems it seems like computers might be getting in the way.
The album in general is a rock album. There are of course some sub-genres you could mention like indie rock. The two bands that came to mind some of the time were The Shins and The Strokes. I thought the lead singer sounded like James Mercer who happens to be one of my favorite vocalists.
The thing I liked about this album is I felt like everyone had an integral part in the song. Take for instance the opener “West of the Best” which has some great grooves from the bassist, some inspired beats by the drummer and killer fills from the guitarists. The vocalist obviously had plenty of time to shine as well.
I liked this whole album but there were some songs that stuck out. “At Length” is a great jam with jazzy overtones and reminded me of one of the most under appreciated bands of all time The Legendary Jim Ruiz Group. “Heaven's A Place” was another highlight. The song is infectious and unequivocally memorable. I would also make sure not to miss “Hot Cross Guns” or the slightly funky and jagged “Schizorazzi (Skitz).” “Schizorazzi (Skitz)” had this groove that reminded me of Primus.
This is definitely a debut that I think people will pay attention to. The band's no frills rock sound was easy for me to appreciate. Recommended.
