┼hief is a solo artist who recently released Whitch? It’s a lo-fi effort that has some inspired moments along with incongruent aspects.
In regards to the production and recording quality it's pretty varied. The levels are all over the place and certain songs are missing essential frequencies. The difference between “Choice of…” and a song like “Alter Call” is noticeable.
Speaking of “Choice of…” this is the best song on the album. It not only showcases a unique style but is full of inventive transitions and parts. The music sounds somewhere between Sunn O))) and NIN. In fact the lyrics could come straight from Reznor’s journal. ┼hief sings, “I won't be alone Sitting on my Burning Throne.” This is a great song and was hoping for more like it.
I’m not sure why the album starts to interject more straightforward rock which doesn't work as well as the opener. Take for instance “The Alcohol” which is more grunge based this time sounding like early Nirvana or The Pixies. The noticeable stylistic shift was somewhat confusing and made me wonder what else I was in for. As it turns out a mixed bag. Other songs like “Grounded” have some decent moments but get dragged out too long. “Grounded” would have worked better at three-minutes instead of six-and-a-half.
A song like “Evil Heart” has multiple vocals lines but not much energy. I would not listen to this song if you were really high. The song repeats like a mantra while it sits in homeostasis. I liked this song but like I said was a bit much for my brain to handle.
There is some more success on “Incubus Dreams.” ”I Can See My Hell From Here... “ also has some success. I would say there are some good melodies on both these songs.
My advice here would be to take the song “Choice of…” and base his future material off of that. Drone metal might work here if he can improve the quality of the recordings. There are some good ideas on this album that with some tweaking could come to their potential. I like what I'm hearing but think he can take his music to the next level with the right focus.
