The Broken Leaves EP
self-released;

3.5 out of 5

By Jamie Funk

I have to admit when I started listening to The Broken Leaves by Honest Answers my first thought was that they sounded young. Do you know how about 90% of pop-punk sounds like a bunch of nineteen-year-olds. This band has way too much exuberant enthusiasm and it feels fairly obvious to me that the world hasn’t shattered their dreams yet and an ex-wife named Katherine hasn’t left the male members with nothing but a freaking goldfish named Frankie.

I just mentioned pop-punk and well the lead singer has this type of stereotypical. It’s slightly nasally but he mostly just sounds like a young dude with a lot of enthusiasm. The music isn’t pop punk. It’s straight up pop music which takes various forms.

On top of that I kept on feeling like this was music I would hear in a Disney cartoon. It’s kind of grand, something kids could sing along with and also feels like you could have an entire dance troupe.

The first song “Watch the World” was reminiscent of Coldplay. I have to admit that as saccharine as this song  gets with lines like “We'll watch the world as it slowly spins around we'll fall in love from up above and you can't quite hear the sound” some parts are catchy.

“Violence on the Atlantic” is harder with a little edge I guess. It sort of has a Linkin Park vibe going but still feels like it came from Nickelodeon. “1864” is dramatic, melancholy and hopeful. It was my personal favorite of the batch. “Haunt Me” is another solid track with good vocal harmonies and hooks.

So truth be told I’m about fifteen years too old for this music. That's at least how I felt. I think this band will appeal to young audience somewhere in there early ’20s. The band does have some talent but they don’t quite seem to know what type of style they are going for. There are a number of different approaches and I thought the song “1864” felt the most natural.

Overall, the EP displays an skilled young band whose members.
