Hunter & Girton is a folk infused alternative rock band consisting of members Jonathan Hunter and Dakota Girton, a pair of singer/songwriters from rural Indiana. They recently released Roots which is a ten-song album. The album is warm acoustic Americana infused folk.

The first song is called “Holy Ghost in The Sky” and in this song specifically it was hard not to think of Johnny Cash. It was the baritone vocals but also the lyrics which seemed like the type you have heard from him.

“Between Us” revolves around a couple strummed chords, drums, pads and bass. It's a warm, reflective ballad. One of the highlights is “Let You Go” which is a stripped back song that contains some of the strongest vocal melodies. “In Your Bones'' contains orchestral accompaniment and is another highlight. The warm strings add a lot to the song. It’s definitely the largest song in scope and hits some impressive heights.

We go back into a reflective and melancholy mood with “Father Time.” I really enjoyed the bluegrass infused “Helluva Night” which contains some banjo and a very nice change in energy that was welcome. “Next To Me” is a classic tale of love while the more energy inducing “Your Heart, My Heart” is perhaps the most hopeful sounding song in the batch. “All That There Is” reminded me again of Johnny Cash while the closer “My Dream” has a similar vibe.

This felt like a classic Americana album from beginning to end. The duo plays with familiar textures and tones that illicit nostalgic and reflective emotions. The band however doesn't go into gray areas or less common emotional tones. On that note I think fans of Americana especially from the midwest will appreciate this quite a bit. Take a listen.
