Ignis is a two-piece rock band based in Albany, New York comprised of brothers Tristan and Colby Beach. They are back with a full length LP entitled Mirrorless. It’s a ten-song album that explores a number of variations on rock.
The album starts off with “Wombat” which begins with reverb laced guitar and driving drums. The vocalist sings, “Where have you gone” as the song starts to build. With very little warning the song rocks out and has the flavor of a post-rock song. It's well executed song about which seems to be about yearning.
The band has some more success with “Red Dress” which displays the band at their best. They showcase the striking juxtaposition of the cleaner elements with the distorted elements. The song is also quite catchy and perhaps the most single worthy in the batch.
The duo display some of their most inventive work on “Backstreets.” It’s an ambient song filled with romanticism and sounded somewhere between Nick Cave and U2. It was one of the highlights on the album. “Pushing Through” has an energy that fits the name. The song feels straight up motivational at points. The band continues with this motivation and hopeful energy with “Go With Me.”
The catchiest song on the album could be “My Way.” There is a palatable mix of americana and garage rock that was easy to appreciate. “Southside Drive” is anthemic and again hits on this powerful wave that felt motivational.
They go into new territory with “My Life” which is stripped back with vocals and guitar being the main elements in the song. The band goes back into post-rock territory with “Fade Away” and close with “Honeybees” which is a mix of nostalgia and southern rock.
Mirrorless is the band's best effort to date and shows a much more wide display of talent. Recommended.
