Hailing from Miami, Florida Jacob George Band consists of Jacob George (guitar/vocals) Yitzi Peetluk (drums), Jeremy Cohen (bass), and Max Boydston (guitar). They are all accomplished musicians who met in 2012 while attending Berklee College of Music in Boston.
They recently released an album entitled Fight the Feeling which was a long time coming. According to the band these ten songs were written over the past seven years. It doesn’t take much time to hear that these guys are accomplished musicians. It’s a very impressive album from a technical perspective as well as a creative one. Apparently the band has been compared to CCR, Radiohead, Dylan, The White Stripes, and Neil Young which is a group of pretty disparate artists in my opinion. In a way it makes some sense after listening to their album. They do have a very general rock sound and I wouldn't confuse that with generic. They sound great and have a sound but it’s pretty broad spanning over decades. They ironically open with “Ending Song”. This song had some of the coolest sounds on the album and it all happens pretty quick. The feedback he gets during the opening riff sounds huge. Once the song gets going it was clear to me that my appreciation of it went past the players musical ability. There were some great riffs as well as catchy vocal melodies. Up next is “Emily” which is one heck of dynamic song. The band goes between rocking out hard to a melodic, soothing section. “Collecting Dust” is another one not to be missed which has a number of memorable melodies but also some killer drumming that really adds a lot to the song. As the album progresses I was impressed by the quality of the songs. I was on board with the songs and couldn't find a dud in the bunch. That being said “When Your Heads a Mess” was a personal favorite. Jacob George Band aren’t the most innovative band to come out this year but they can sure write a good song. As far as no frills rock bands this is one of the better ones.
