Oh how times have changed. When I was in high school and college about twenty years ago chasing love was different. It was different because of technology. The lack of things like social media, smartphones and even the general lack of access to the Internet changed the way we courted a love interest. Jaden Young explores some of the timeless qualities about love as well as the way technology has impacted the way we maneuver around it throughout this EP.
His five-song EP Openetic starts with “Knockoff” which focuses on more alpha like instincts. He sings about more cliche subjects such as being top dog and having money. The beat is deep with bright elements creating hypnotic melodies. His delivery on the verse is covered in auto-tune and the hook is catchy. The song is easy to appreciate but actually felt a bit disconnected from the themes of love that the other songs have.
“Recently Deleted” is a highlight. His delivery is more heartfelt and he takes on a different persona as a heartbroken soul. Young sings about how he wishes things were the way they used to be before he deleted a lover’s number from his phone. The hook is great and more infectious the more you hear it.
Young has more success with “My Somebody” where he sings about finding solace in being alone. He again weaves in modern day behaviors like turning your phone onto “Do Not Disturb.” “Imaginary Love” is well done as well making for a lush, contemplative song. He turns the tables on “Why I Left U” where he no longer plays the brokenhearted person and instead wants to move on.
This EP was well done. I think the first song felt a little out of place but themes of love and loss are well implemented on the other four songs. There is a good amount of potential here and I look forward to hearing more.
