James Uhall started playing trombone in sixth grade. He picked up bass, guitar and keys and is currently focused on composition. This sounds a lot like me except I started with trumpet and graduated with composition more than a decade ago.
Uhall plays everything on his EP Faded which showcases different styles. So let's get into it.
Up first is “Wanderlust” which is more or less a lot of lead guitar. I was impressed by his style as well as the bass rhythm I can't say that about the programmed drums which lacked any kind of real dynamics and served to just add a beat. The song has a psychedelic feel to it as he utilizes phaser effects on the rhythm guitar.
Next is “Outlaw” which is where he changes styles. It displays a lack of cohesion to his sound and focus. The song is also about 3 dbs louder which points to a subpar mastering job. It’s an electronic lounge song with a lot of atmosphere as well as arpeggiated synth.
It gains momentum and intensity. That being said Uhall still has a long way to go as producer and might want to listen to artists like Four Tet, Aphex Twin and Squarepusher to get inspired if he is interested in making more songs in this vein.
“Revival” is perhaps the most unique song. It is more rock based and hypnotic. Uhall explores dissonance at points but some of the strumming sounds out of sync. “Lifted” goes back into lead guitar territory while “Yew” is a little more mellow, atmospheric and open.
Uhall has talent as a musician but he needs direction with his sound. Luckily, he has a lot of time to figure that out while he is honing in on his craft. The production and recording quality will certainly need to improve at some point to compete with professional recording but this is a solid start.
Uhall falls into a case of wait and see for now. I look forward to his evolution.
