Jared Mancuso has been a part of several musical projects throughout his life ranging over a variety of different styles. His most recent solo project Superdope was recorded at his home in Pennsylvania and consists of ten alternative rock songs that explore experience and feeling in an energetic, honest and accessible way.
Right out of the gate “Roll Over” delivers a hard-hitting, bluesy feel with power chords, crashing symbols and unfettered emotive vocals that maintain a sense of brightness and fun even while driving home a solid hit. The following track “La De Da” is less aggressive and features a swinging rhythm and catchy vocal harmonies. Landing somewhere between alternative rock and folky blues “The F*ck” reflects on the phenomenon of aging and what it means for each of us.
A mellow, reverb-laced electric guitar gently leads the way for Mancuso’s soothing vocals in “Would You” a slow-paced and simple ballad that is contrasted by the album’s title track, a high energy power anthem with repeated guitar riffs, distorted vocals and a solid percussion foundation that blends together to form a cohesive soundscape. “Mayday” an instrumental piece displays Mancuso’s talent in creating complex and moving sounds even with limited instrumentation.
“Rest of Our Lives” continues in the same bluesy rock vein as the rest of the album and combines vocals and instruments seamlessly to create arguably the catchiest and most memorable track no the entire record. The next track “Drive Me Crazy” starts off slow but gradually grows in dynamic intensity as the song progresses to the very end.
As the album nears its ending “The Other Side” channels classic rock and “Water” employs acoustic guitar in a highly melodic, harmonious tune sure to leave the listener with a pleasant feeling, appropriate for the record’s final song. Overall, Superdope is a genuinely enjoyable listening experience and a true showcase of Jared Mancuso’s musical talent.
