self-released; 2020

3.7 out of 5

By Dan Weston

Jim Danby is an artist from the UK who recently released Back To My Place. Danby is in his mid 50’s and has been making music for about twenty years. I mention this because well Danby seems to have a good hint on how to live a “happy” life. Danby seems very content to me and this album seems to be a manifestation of that. He explains “I guess my songs are based on life, love and laughter to varying degrees, and so this album is a mix of themes and styles.”

He opens with “Trekkin’” where he declares “I’m happy, so happy.” I had no reason not to believe the dude seemed really pumped for a walk and I enjoyed those snacks he packed away. The song is unapologetically positive and it's just about appreciating the little things.

“Souvenirs” is more mellow and reflective but still positive. He sings somewhat comically about rejecting possible one-night stands. The song is mainly about gratitude for the long term relationships he has had.

“Me Mother Showed Me How” was fun and felt like a drinking song. The vocals have an affectation that fits the music here and once you hear it you will know what  I’m talking about. “Tell Me Why” felt more cerebral and moody. I heard some elements of Pink Floyd in terms of the atmosphere as well as political themes.

That is followed by a certified highlight entitled “Don’t Need Cocaine” which is a folk inspired, knee slapping sing along. I just really enjoyed the groove which makes you want to dance in an old dive bar. I also really enjoyed the closing track “Back To My Place” where he declares his place needs a good cleaning.

This album seems very authentic to me. No matter what the emotional resonance I felt like Danby was being honest. That felt like a huge plus to me while enjoying these songs. Recommended.
