John Martine is a singer/songwriter who recently released Better With Age. Martine played in the bar circuit in the ’80s and ’90s. He was also a member of the hair metal band Frenzy. Unsurprisingly, Better With Age sounds like it is heavily influenced from the ’80s.
In fact it just kind of sounds like it's from the ’80s. I can’t say there is a contemporary feel to the music in regards to the production, lyrics and songwriting. Suffice it to say the music will resonate more with people who tend to like ‘80s or early 90's rock.
Up first is “Na Na Na.” You are greeted with an organ and guitar and before you know it Martine yells “1,2,3,4” and almost instantly sent my mind back to a different time period. You don’t hear that trope much anymore which I miss. The song in general has a familiar backyard BBQ type vibe. It’s upbeat, catchy and palatable enough for anyone to bob their head to while having a conversation. It comes with a standard guitar solo which was technically impressive but also predictable.
For the most part “Na Na Na” sets the mood for the rest of the album. “Be Here with Me” and “Rearview Mirror” have a similar feel that was very pleasing to my ears . Other songs like “Fall Down” have that ’80s ballad vibe that I throughly enjoyed. “Fall Down” transported me back into an elementary school dance in the late ’80s.
There weren’t any surprises as the album moved forward but there were a couple of highlights. “Anything” was a personal favorite and I thought it was his best vocal performance. I also thought the vocals were processed in a more natural way.
Better With Age is a specific taste. I don’t think you can argue that. Take a listen and see what you think.
