Hailing from Nashville, Tennessee, Jon Worthy has been playing guitar, singing and writing music for several years. After being a part of a band for over two years, he decided to start a solo project on the side and has released a six-song EP as well as a full-length album. May You Live Happily Ever After, the full-length album, is comprised of ten modern rock & roll tunes, as well as a hidden track at the very end.
The record opens with the hauntingly catchy “Don’t Count On Me” a bluesy, swinging rock anthem that incorporates organ chords and electric guitar riffs seamlessly over crashing cymbals and throbbing drums. Worthy’s voice, a unique mix of crisp and smooth, layers nicely over the soundscape, especially in the rhythmically complex “I Do Abide” and the more straightforward “Like The Wind” a beach rock-esque track.
The energy of the record continues to abound in “Hot B*tch” in which a lightning-paced guitar solo lights up the song with strong, vibrant life. Reverb-laced vocals and background harmonies lead the way in “How You Doin Today” followed by “Can’t Help But Feel” a slightly dialed-back power ballad featuring a wide range of dynamics, style and intensity as the song progresses.
Ethereal howling, droning chords and a mellow guitar riff introduce the listener to “Come Commala” as Worthy takes on a sullen persona in this nontraditional, unconventional and experimental track, a testament to Worthy’s versatility and ability to embody several different musical styles. After returning to his signature style in “Dreamin,” Worthy takes a short jaunt into acoustic folk with “Family” a warm, simple tune that is as honest and genuine as it is beautiful.
“In the End” brings the album to its close with celebratory and encouraging attitude. The danceable song contains a hidden track at the end, an atmospheric song made up of Worthy’s voice and his guitar. Overall, May You Live Happily Ever After is a masterful album, and the stylistic and artistic choices Jon Worthy continuously makes throughout his music is evidence of his natural talent and honed skills that have converged into his spectacular project.
