Argentina born and now established in Florida musician Jonathan Di Renzo first picked up a guitar at age twelve. Now at thirty-one he has toured, gained a solid fan base and recently released Getting Nowhere.
Getting Nowhere is a pretty straightforward pop/rock record. The album is full of hooks and palatable melodies but also has gone down a pretty straight path. His vocals are at the center and they sound great. In fact the production is exceptional from head to toe. This is a studio quality commercial release.
He opens with a rocker called “Desire” which revolves around distorted rhythm guitars, pulsating drums and a steady bass. The song moves fast and fluidly with transitions and he packs a lot into three-and-a-half minutes. Suffice it to say if you enjoy this track I would keep listening because there are plenty of more like it.
He doesn't waste any time changing things up with “Truth.” It starts with a lone acoustic guitar and is quite reflective. The song does starts to pick up with instrumentation but it never puts the pedal to the metal like on the first track.
After that the album continues with consistently solid songwriting. There is a good ebb and flow between slower melancholy songs like “Promises” to playful rock with an early ’90s vibe like “Stay.” I have to admit I was a little thrown off with “Night Sun” which has a distinct country vibe.
The second half of the album consists of mostly rock songs. “Back To Myself” and “Home” were standouts by a thin margin.
Di Renzo isn’t throwing me for a spin with this album. It’s familiar sounding but also thoroughly enjoyable. The delivery, songwriting and production are all well above average, Recommended.
