Josh North is back with a new release entitled BE OK. The album contains eleven songs which are a mix between rock and folk.
The first two songs “If You Follow” and “A Good Day” are almost overwhelmingly positive. It isn’t a bit gray. Out of the two songs I preferred the former and the way the female and male vocals intersect. “A Good Day” reminded me of the Black Eyed Peas, not really the music but the overall sentiment and hook. The Black Eyed Peas proclaimed that tonight was going to be a good night and North proclaims the same thing but I guess he isn’t a night owl.
“Spotlights'' felt more like a motivational message that was warm and sincere. One of the highlights was “Home” because I simply enjoyed the melodies and delivery. The very positive sentiment comes again with “When I Say I Love You.”
I really enjoyed the guitar work on “Through The Woods' ' as well as the slow sunburn of “Don’t Blink.” One of the other highlights to my ears was “Another Way” but perhaps my favorite was the closer “Get Up” which contains a deep beat, electric piano and other elements.
This album felt somewhat akin to a Tony Robbins conference or Sunday worship. I say that because of the straightforward motivational lyrics and the general feeling of persevering through struggle. If an album can be categorized as self-help this is. With messages like”it’s going to be ok,” “just believe” and “start today not tomorrow” throughout, it might give you that extra push to get going.
I’ve been on this rock for a little over forty years and have heard messages similar to these for decades. That being said I think it’s important for them to keep on reverberating in our culture and North is certainly doing that. Take a listen.
