Andy Lyon (guitar/bass/vocals) and Sam Tiger (drums/bass/vocals) are the duo Jungle Jungle. On their release The Stranger Danger they bring us five song which combine like minded sub genres like surf and garage rock.
The band isn't reinventing the wheel and feels more like a homage to surf and garage bands in a very similar way to a band like The Strokes and many other bands have done in the past fifteen years. Their songs are very distorted throughout and is an aesthetic that makes the music feel like one unavoidable force as opposed to having distinct elements. I thought it was worked for the most part but would have prefered if the vocals weren’t as buried.
All things considered the songs are simple, catchy and raw. They start with an undeniably catchy track entitled “Good”. It took me a couple listen but I think this was my personal favorite track which has a good amount of rock attitude that doesn't make itself know enough these days.
“Baby It's Alright” is prefect combination of garage and surf. A song you could imagine being played by a band like The Stooges. I think Iggy Pop would be proud. If you enjoyed the first two song keep listening. The title song veers more towards straight surf with heavy distortion while “My Lady Doll” has some of the most impressive guitar work along with great drumming.
The closer “Risky Fingers” felt even heavier to to me then the previous songs. There were some moments where the three chord punk style riffs were bathed in 2nd and 3rd order harmonics.
This duo has some potential and talent. I’d like to see who else they differentiate themselves from the mounds of other bands who climbing up a similar tree. In the meantime Stranger Danger is an enjoyable release I think fans of garage/surf rock will enjoy.
