Kaiza Kushington is a solo artist from London who recently released Beta Male. It’s a pretty eclectic EP which showcases a number of different styles. It’s a complete DIY affair and sounds quite good from a production and engineering perspective.

Up first is “Oh Little Playmate” which was arguably the highlight. There is a bit of Animal Collective vibe here between the vocals harmonies and the production. It’s a bit more electronic because of the drum beat but really enjoyed what I hear.

Up next is “Kaiza Kushington & Ripley - Beta Male feat. Ripley” which really has a distinctly different vibe. There is clear subdued funky lounge vibe song on this track . The bass is kicking and is the lead instrument while atmospheric elements blend into the background. “Noite Sem Lua” is the next track which again is a departure. It’s the sparsest track and contains his vocals and guitar. It’s a solid song which is carried by his vocal melody.

He revisits the Animal Collective vibe on “Soother”. Amidst some sounds which sound like dogs barking and chopped up guitar are some melodies that make the song work. “Candy & Chocolate” maybe the most experimental song of the batch. The song combines manipulated vocal samples that merge with other elements to give the song a cartoonish quality. It may very well the be the catchiest song on the album .

Beta Male is a bit scattered in terms of style. Kushington has some great ideas and would like to see if he merge them together in a cohesive sound. That beings said Beta Male is still quite enjoyable. Recommended.
