Fate or Coincidence
self-released; 2014

3.5 out of 5

By Ted Rogen

After Kimberley Terrace won her category at the Queensland Music Awards last year in Brisbane, Australia she decided she would become more serious about her hobby. The seventeen-year-old songwriter/producer/singer went ahead and recorded, mixed and mastered her own five-song EP entitled Fate or Coincidence.

She may be young but she has an ample amount of talent regardless of her age.  At the heart of the music is an acoustic guitar and her vocals. These two components are the anchor in the music. Her guitar playing is simple but effective while her voice is soft and pretty (she does sound young). Even though her acoustic guitar and voice are the focal points she did put some time and effort into the bass and drum parts as well.

The EP opens with “Today.” She displays her versatility as she goes from quaint and cute to belting out a more confident chorus. She fits in a lot of words into the measures, which don’t feel forced. “I Cannot Lie” is heartfelt song that reinforces her vocal abilities. The highlight of the EP was “”Love, Hate, Pain,” which not only had the most inventive guitar parts but she also excels at creating atmospheric elements that benefited the song.

She closes with “Sing Loud,” which is an upbeat song that fit her vocal style. She implements light percussion and an unexpected bass breakdown. It was a good way to end the EP.

Let’s be honest - you won't hear this music blasting out of cars by males over the age of thirty. It’s cute and delicate music that is quite dainty. That being said it is also good. Terrace is seventeen and has all the time in the world to work on her craft. At some point she may want to step into a professional studio and work with a producer to compete with commercial acts but this is a formidable release from a young talent.
