Kind Country is a band from Minneapolis, Minnesota that is releasing Hard Times. The band plays an upbeat, energetic bluegrass with heavy strains of Americana. This is the type of music that is best heard live.
The band gets going with the fast and infectious “Turbines.” By all accounts the style felt very straightforward and sounds exactly what you might expect from a top notch bluegrass band. “The Way That I Wanted” slows things down a bit and is more single worthy. The song is catchy with memorable vocal melodies. The fast and knee slapping bluegrass returns on “My Way Down.” “Daybreak in Dixie” is even faster. The title track “Hard Times” felt like another single worthy song due to the anthemic chorus.
I was reminded of The Dave Matthews band when they play “Luigi” while “Black Rooster” contains some of the most impressive solos on the album. The band plays at an almost comical pace on “Ride on to the Dream.”
Don’t sleep on the emotionally resonant “Dad & Gone” or “Wine” which contained some of my favorite vocal performances. They close out with “Tennessee” which is another knee slapping good time.
A little less than twenty years I was attending college in Champaign, IL. There was a venue called the Canopy Club that my friends would go to to hear myriad bands. We would see bands like The String Cheese Incident, Umphrey's McGee and countless others.
Kind Country has that same energy I experienced in that club so many times. On this album Kind Country isn’t going anywhere this music hasn't gone before. Needless to say King Country is the real deal and even though I haven’t seen them live I would place my bet that they are amazing to hear live.
