Kinecism
self-released

4.3 out of 5 - TOP ALBUM

By Matt Jensen
Kinematic is a band from Australia who calls their music “unpop.” After listening to their exceptional album Kinecism I wish pop music in the states sounded more like the “unpop” these guys play. Kinematic have been playing music for a while and it shows. The songwriting is original, creative and dare I say poppy. Kinematic at its core play indie rock and there isn’t too much that makes their sound very distinct but it is that they do it so gosh darn well.

If Kinecism were released in the early ‘90s it would find a snug home between Britpop bands like Blur and Pulp. Take a song like “Broken Strings” and listen to it and tell me it doesn’t have the same appeal “Coffee and TV” has when that was released. It’s warm, fun to bob your head to and downright infectious. Going back further in time the music even bares similarities to The Beatles. There are some unequivocal similarities when you hear “Come into the Light” as well as a couple of other songs

A majority of the songs are just such a pleasure to listen to. The band sounds so loose and like they are genuinely having a blast playing the songs.  If you can take a listen to a song like “We are the Sanitation Department of Power Ballad City” and not experience a jolt of joy I’d say you were lying.

They don’t always need a full band to sound good either. The opener “(Even then) the Band Played On” revolves around an acoustic guitar and some great vocal harmonies. When it comes to lyrics they are clever, avoid clichés and never feel contrived.

The album is comprised of mostly three-to-four minute songs but the closer “Slow Burn” is close to ten minutes in length. It is also perhaps the most ambitious track on the album. The band opens up and zeros in on some inventive guitar work. It sounds like a improvised jam sound session but is too meticulous to be.

I am not sure if the band knows it but this is a damn near perfect pop album. The music gives me all the feelings I yearn for when I listen to a pop song. I have to say these guys aren't getting nearly as much love as they deserve so take a listen. I’m sure you will be glad you did.
