Kolten Hull was born in Cold Lake, Alberta and grew up in Ottawa, Ontario. Although Hull works in the electrical field, music has always been his main outlet for expression. With a musical palette that ranges from everything from such artists like The Beatles, Jack Johnson, Kid Cudi, Angus and Julia Stone, among many others, Hull’s signature sound includes his influences as well as enlisting a sound that is solely his.
Hull released his self-titled debut Kolten Hull. Most of the songs are slow burning ballads with a stirring sense that permeates these tracks. Dramatic and dynamic, these unique set of songs sees the artist baring his soul in the confessional singer/songwriter vein. The engrossing storytelling on this record is much like taking a page out of Hull’s journal. Hull wears his heart on his sleeve with his emotive vocals and poignant lyrics.
Kolten Hull opens up with “The Boy Lives On” that starts off to some noodling on the acoustic guitar. The acoustic sounds then segue into a dramatic drumming beat. This is a dynamic acoustic track that highlights a smoldering feel on the vocals. There is a stripped-down feel leaning toward a sparse cadence. The music has a nice flow to it. Listeners will be swayed by the very ebb and flow of the music. The vocals are touched with a bit of reverb, retaining a cavernous display.
“When Lovin’ Lets You Go” harkens to a Beatles-inspired sound. There is a melodic vibe to this catchy song about a roller-coaster relationship that you just can’t give up on. A psychedelic guitar solo closes near the one-and-a-half-minute mark. Evident on this track is a healthy melding of acoustic guitar, drums and percussions. The music has a real groovy twist to this great pop vibe.
On “So Much Love,” there is some dynamic numerating on the acoustic guitar. A groovy beat undulates on this song. The flow is melodic and nice. A Beach Boys vibe could be detected and later on in the track a Jack Johnson feel surfaces that pulls forth a sunny sound on the acoustic guitar. Bright and vibrant possibilities lend itself in the lyrics that are uplifting and filled with positive vibes.
Again, like in the previous songs, the closer “Rainbows” also covers a Beatles-esque appeal. The vocal harmonies altogether are harmonic and a strong sense of urgency underlines this track, filtering in a dramatic cadence. An infectious sound comes from the piano. The melody is really inviting.
With resonating vocals, searing lyrics and a dynamic acoustic vibe, Hull’s album is a cohesive release that aligns with the artist’s signature sound. In the singer/songwriter vein, this release culminates with a sound that is introspective and thought-provoking. The inquisitive lyrics will put listeners in a contemplative mood.
There is something familiar about this collection of songs. It is like coming home after being away for a long time. The feelings of comfort and solace is irreplaceable. With a retro-inspired vibe, Hull’s feet are planted in both worlds of new and old. Hull’s recordings adapt a classic rock vibe as well as incorporating a modernized edge to the vintage rock tunes. The sound will speak to fans of oldies and contemporary music alike.
Buoyed with emotion and power, let the weight of this world lift and be swept away by these transformative songs that will transport you from the ordinary everyday of this world. This album will take you to a different setting. Be sure you have a listen today!
