I’ll start out by saying I don’t understand a lick of French and that le concert by lemaycontent is sung entirely in French. That doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy it. I listen to plenty of music where the words are almost impossible to hear or just sung in a different language and enjoy the hell out of it.
Karl Lemay is the only man in charge of lemaycontent and his album was recorded live during concerts and sound checks. Apparently he takes the mixes straight from an H4 portable recorder because he separates the music from the sound of the audience. Although I couldn’t understand the lyrics I knew what he was singing about. For instance the opener “Gentleman” is about Arsene Lupin who is the famous 19th century cat burglar and womanizer. Like the other songs on the album the song is around two-minutes long and feels light, tongue and cheek and somewhere between spaghetti western and post punk. I wanted to hear the drums a bit more beefed up but it was forgivable because the vocals are such as important aspect. “Coeur Balafre” is about a man who loses his lover to a woman. The song like the first feels light and catchy. It’s the kind of song you could bob your head to no matter what the lyrics were about. As the album progresses it’s undeniable that the songs have a similar feel and vibe. That being said my personal favorite was “Epique Epoque” which feels silly at times but also sometimes has a noir vibe. Even more odd was that I was reminded of Depeche Mode at times. The main riff has some resemblance to “Personal Jesus.” At the end of the day, le concert sounds like a concert minus the actual audience. The songs play like a playlist and I could certainly imagine myself enjoying his music live while sipping on a cocktail that is being contained by a purple top hat instead of a glass.
