The music on No Place in Your World by Lissa Jayne Music is some of the most original music I have heard in recent months. It’s hard to pinpoint and that's what I like about it. There’s not only something unique about her vocals but the music as well.
Sometimes she sounds tongue and cheek other times as if she might sound if she was delivering lines from a Broadway play. Either way I found her singing style easy to enjoy. I liked her unique style and tonal qualities of her vocals. The lyrics are also quiet unique. I was hoping for a lyric sheet because there are some zingers such “he hands me wings you hand me a cage.”
The music throughout the album is sparse and there isn’t a whole lot going on with the guitar leading the charge. That being said it works well on every song and I didn't feel like anything was missing. She opens with “Batface Girl” which is a highlight. As a clear, slightly haunting guitar part plays she introduces her voice. This is a great dynamic performance that showcases her voice. I almost want to compare it to Joanna Newsom in that there are characteristics that clearly make it recognizable.
“Find Another Lover” has shades of PJ Harvey that are made with atmospheric pads and clean guitar while “Towns That Make you Bizarre” has a theatrical quality to it. “Damn your Name” is a little more festive. The song contains horns as well as a waltz swing you could dance to. She closes with “That Girl is Gone” which is a melancholy piano lead song.
No Place in Your World isn’t an EP that hits you over the head. It’s swift and clever. Above all else this EP got my attention because I felt her sound created a rock hard foundation for her to build off of. In this day and age with so many bands sounding similar to each other No Place in Your World is a breath of fresh air.
