Seattle-based singer/songwriter Liv Victorino has long since been a part of the local music scene. Ever since her first high school band at 14, Victorino has been playing the circuit of Seattle bars like the Central Station, Chop Suey and other such institutions. It was only toward college that she put away her full band rock sound and turned inward for inspiration. With topics ranging from desires and observations on relationships and just life in general, Victorino has set a path apart from the grungy rock n’ roll scene and into a more introspective and reflective discovery of her talents on Sheer Force of Will. Rolling forth with “deft finger-picking and cheerful-sounding progressions,” Victorino makes it known that she is a singer/songwriter worth getting familiarized with. Her delivery and lyrics make this a journey worthy of further exploration.
Sheer Force of Will moves forward with “Finish What You Start,” where lively percussions greet the start of this track. Victorino’s vocals keep your attention throughout. With smooth evocative layers; she harmonizes to great effect, creating crescendos through the ebb and flow of the song. A folksy melody comes from the guitar feeling in the country and Americana vein on “You’re Never Going To Figure It Out.” The combined vocal layers feel very uplifting and light-hearted. Victorino’s sweet vocals disguise the angsty lyrics.
“Dirty Jobs” starts off in a moody vibe and some synths add to the ambiance. Next, the guitars set in feeling very somber. The vibe grows gradually, as Victorino’s vocals are filled with mood and feeling. More guitars sound out and this time around the tune is more in the upbeat vein on “Before The World Ends.” I enjoyed the energy and delivery here. This felt like another happy-sounding song with dark lyrics about a relationship threatened by outside things like existential change and worldly events.
In the vein of acoustic indie/folk acts like Elliott Smith, Ben Gibbard and Phoebe Bridgers, the sparse arrangement of just guitar accompanied with vocals is made up with enthusiasm. Though the approach is simple, Victorino’s singer/songwriter persona on this album will definitely draw you in closer to her sounds. Her warm vocals brim with emotions and feeling and the guitar sets the tone in the backdrop. A home recording, the lo-fi-ness of the EP is something that highlights the raw emotions coming from the recording. Her music is the perfect fit for the open mic night crowd or coffee house ambiances and is also great for some relaxation or might you get inspired for getting some studying done. This project is packed with mood and atmosphere in the singer/songwriter vein. Something to enjoy if you’re into simple chord progressions over vocal harmonies, or acoustic melodies with just the right amount of spunk and soul to get you moving in no time, this EP is a must-listen, so dive right in!
