Long Tail is a three-piece band from Dublin, Ireland, that recently released a four-song EP entitled Your Time. The band is led by Ed Scanlan who writes the music and lyrics. They play music that is often upbeat, optimistic and had a tendency to remind me of a ’90s band. I thought of the band Foo Fighters in particular a number of times throughout these songs.
The recording is sharp. They decided to go into a pro studio and the proof is in the pudding. I thought everything sounded good in the mix and the recording captured a lot of live energy.
The four songs as seamless and cohesive. They don't waste any time letting you know what type of band they are. Suffice it to say these four songs are meant to give an unambigious invitation to your ears as to what they are all about.
The band starts with “Your Time” which is a pretty straightforward yet powerful rock tune. It’s a song with a number of catchy hooks and is palatable the first time you hear it. It may not be the most groundbreaking song but it certainly held its own in terms of songwriting.
Up next is “Better Way” which is a little more dynamic than the opener. The song starts off subtle and soft and works its way to a more intense energy as the song progresses. I thought Scanlan’s vocals really shined on this track. The song definitely has some of that ’90s flair I was mentioning earlier.
The band continues with “Our Star” which is full of catchy hooks underneath the distorted guitars. I again thought the vocal work was memorable. They close with “More of the Same” which is a fast, tight song that solidifies the band's talent.
Long Tail may not be reinventing the wheel with this four-track EP but it feels like a throwback to popular alternative songs that were more prevalent fifteen to twenty years ago. The band is also just getting started as they have a full-length album coming in the not too distant future. Recommended.
