Caleb Murphy (vocals/guitar), Arden Mcnab (bass) and Liam Taylor (drums) are the three members of Lost By Design. The band recently released a self-titled EP Lost By Design that showcases an eclectic pop band that experiments with everything from metal riffs, soft sentimental verses to music that almost sounds like it could be blasting from a dance floor.
One thing that all the songs have in common is that the songs don’t contain much levity. Everything from the vocals to the instrumental parts feels dramatic and serious. It’s the type of music that you do kind of have to be in the mood for because it does demand your attention. They starts things off with “Crystal Clear” which clocks in tight under two minutes and kind of felt somewhere between an intro and an unfinished song. It starts around bass, piano, soft pads and vocals. Heavy drums and distorted guitars make their presence known and the band goes into an Evanescent type metal riff. The song stops rather abruptly and goes into what sounds like a beat you might hear off an Usher Album. It doesn’t take long for metal guitar and drumming to get back in the mix. The techno style euro synth feels a bit odd in the mix and I still am not completely sure how I feel about it. I started to pick up on themes such as god within the first two songs. It was evident that the singer believes in god. He sings, “We were born to be kings and queens/ We were made with the breath of god/You can say that we will never rise/look at us now.” The euro synth is back on the next song “Hunger For Change” along with mythical sounding vocals. The verse contains hard-hitting drums and soft pads. During the bridge the staple distorted guitars are introduced back into the mix. “Made For You” is about yearning love while “Smash Every Mirror” has Puddle of Mudd type of vibe. They close with “Hall Of Dreams” which dances upon topics such as destiny, illusion, free will and regret. It is also an overt declaration about god. Overall Lost By Design is all about synths, distorted guitars and whole lot of passion.
