Remix albums - love them or hate them they exist. Luca Brunetti recently had his 2013 album Mediterranean/Mediterraneo remixed by a handful of artists which applied their own artistic interpretation of his music entitled The Mediterranean Remixes. I felt weird reviewing a remix album when I haven't heard the original album so I took a listen to the original and I have to say they weren't huge departures from the original material. The music is instrumental and could fall in the category of world or new age.
The first song on the album is entitled “Bazar” and was remixed by W.A.H. It combines bongos, atmospheric pads and bass to create a chill but forward-moving piece. In fact the same type of vibe is repeated on a number of other songs. “Lampare” for instance has a similar feel that features an acoustic guitar but instills the same tranquil response.
“Cartagine” was a song that originally did not have vocals but were added by the remixers who are called Klod Rights. They unleash sparse but effective vocals that are dosed in a heavy amount of reverb. This is one of the songs that had a very different feel from that of the original.
One of the most unique remixes amongst the batch was “Calypso,” which was one of the most fleshed-out songs amongst the batch. It’s an upbeat song with an infectious guitar, various percussive effects and overall festive vibe. Another highlight was the eastern mythic-sounding “Aliseo.” The song combines delayed synths and percussion to create a soft yet psychedelic whirlwind of sound.
A instrumental new age/ world album like The Mediterranean Remixes will resonate most with those who appreciate the genre. I can’t really see people who aren't into the genre getting turned by this album. That being said, you never know so give it a spin.
