My Nguyen

Lybrandt is a singer/songwriter from Muskegon, Michigan. He says that writing music is sort of like therapy for him. It’s a way for him to deal with everything that is swirling around in his head. In a way, music is a release from everything going on around him. Lybrandt is releasing his debut, a ten-track album entitled Feels Like Nothin.

The debut album contains a diverse set of sounds from indie rock, alt and acoustic but mainly focuses on the folk genre.

Feels Like Nothin
launches with “Who Are you” that from the get-go the vocals rush in with the dynamic accompaniment of the acoustic guitar. This is a stripped-down track. The acoustic number then segues into a horn section. The horn dresses the song with an energized sound. The vocals are warm and reverberating.

Following is “Lies,” where island percussion themes address the start of this track. The vocals are covered in reverb, giving off an echo-y glare. A tropical/beach-y flavor could be unearthed from the Caribbean-like driven beat. The beat simmers in the backdrop with a lively sound. The keys make the song more energized and atmospheric. The strings add in a lush and soaring soundscape to this track. The song has a slower sauntering vibe – a slow groove that makes it a definite slow burn.

On “I Hope,” the percussions give off an energized appeal. This is a moody track filled with grit. A gnarly bluesy vibe is relinquished. The vocals are sung with a whole lot of attitude and flair. A great country-blues feel comes from the bombastic and lively guitars. An industrial vibe sounds off from the electronic beats. A metal-tinged feel could be detected. Eerie cadences are emitted into the ether.

On the closer “Lullaby For Enslie,” a ghostly piano tune makes its way to the start of this song. This is a blithe track filled with light indie rock undertones. It starts off to the sound of keys and then next a sauntering drumming beat comes in. The trickling cadences on the keys give off a lulling feel like in a lullaby. Nice and soothing sounds are evoked. The soft lilting cadences on this lullaby-like track is an apt closer to a dynamic album.

In the singer/songwriter vein, these songs flesh out a memorable and emotional journey. Powerful and heartfelt, Feels Like Nothin is an exciting record that delves into an eclectic sound. The sound, though varied, hones into a cohesive signature-based sound. These folk-led indie rock songs saunter towards an energized cadence that makes them invigorating. A lot of these tunes got stuck in my head and I could feel myself humming them throughout the day.

With contagious vocals, Lybrandt sings in a warm and reverberating timbre. His voice is filled with an effusiveness that makes it infectious. A lot of the tracks are great to sing-along to. The combined vocal harmonies make the sound even more dynamic and melodic.
