Majed is a singer/songwriter from California who released Sketch. The songs seem to be live recordings with little to no overdubs. It’s a minimal set up of guitar, vocals and some piano. As far as the songs go it's pretty basic singer/songwriter style pop. There isn’t anything too out of the ordinary and it is a couple shades away from an artist like Jack Johnson. Lyrically, Majed also keeps things fairly predictable.
The topics are run of the mill love songs and he pours on a good amount of platitudes and tropes. Take for instance “Kryptonite.” He sings “So hold on everything will be all right, Don't tell me you want to leave tonight.” Suffice it to say I would have liked some poetic, ambiguous language at times. Finding a new way to say the same old thing goes a long way when the song revolves around the words.
“Fool's Gold” has a classic by the beach strumming a guitar type feel. The topic is a familiar one that has been done plenty of times before. Luckily, Majed has a pleasant voice - a voice I think the ladies will find attractive. Next up is the piano led “Forever.” He plays basic chords over his voice and there’s not much more to it than that.
“Waiting” strays away from the concept of romantic love. This time he sings about his dad. It’s extremely straightforward and I will let you listen to it to figure out what it's about. He closes with “Traveling Man” where he showcases some of his lead guitar skills. Good stuff and I would like to hear more of it in the future.
Majed has some skill but is going to have to push himself to create more of a signature sound on his next effort. The pop singer/songwriter style he showcases here is extremely oversaturated. In fact I hear so many artists that attempt the same feel and vibe that he has.
Majed does put some heart into his music and he does have a good voice. That being said if he really wants to get ears on his music he will have to figure out the x-factor that separates him from so many like-minded artists.
