There are plenty of bands out there that try to create visceral music that they want to feel like a violent, cathartic purge. A lot of bands fail miserably and end up sounding like an entitled teenager complaining about first world problems. This is not the case with newcomers Max Kala. On their debut album Amplification & Super Regeneration the band brings the release that you need oh so badly in your life. This is an album for the guy who has an asshole for a boss and wants to throw his head into a wall or just looks around the world and wants to annihilate all the bullshit he hears and sees. These guys meld punk with rock while defining their own sound. It sounds real and raw while not taking itself too seriously either. There are a lot of great tracks here so let’s start at the top. After a short intro the band raises your adrenaline level with “Do the Indoctrination.” The opening riff face plants you into the cement. As the song progresses, they impress with vocals harmonies, unexpected time changes and infectious melodies. It’s a killer first song but not the last. Possibly one of my favorite titles of all time could be their second track “Go Fuck Your Conditional Love.” It was only ten o'clock in the morning when I was listening to this track but it was so intense I needed to chase it with a shot of bourbon. “Prix Fixe” has some fine, fine lyrics that will make you think. The vocalist talks about cheeseburgers and milkshakes but the best line is when the music subsides and he delivers the line, “I would like the press to know I didn’t get my Spaghetti O's.” Pure poetry right there my friend. As the album progresses the band brings the pain; my personal favorite being “Goodluck, Good night, Goodbye.” The music Max Kala makes cannot sound contrived and if it contains one ounce of pretense it would be tainted. Luckily, they avoided both these things and instead bring us a jolt of Amplification & Super Regeneration that is the real deal.
