Mhostly Ghostly are a five-piece band comprised of Isaac Bartick, J Blas, Logan Fletcher, Reid Immel and Simon Olander. The recently established band is showing a lot of potential on their release Jr.
The album is well recorded and produced with some solid songwriting. They don’t make pop music but something about the songs make them enjoyable the first time you hear them causing you to come back for more.
Take for instance the opener “Calendars” which is a highlight. The song is a fun, relatively mellow rock song. I thought the vocal melody was especially catchy in this song and was the psychedelic sounding guitar worked well on the song. There is definitely a bit of ’70s vibe on this song.
The band finds more success on “Right In The Open.” The main guitar melody repeats like a mantra. There is nothing wrong with that as the vocal line carries the song. The first two songs are arguably their strongest but the band certainly has some more highlights along the way.
Up next is “Surgeon In Youth” which is noticeably not as loud as some of the other songs. This is something a better mastering job would have helped with. That being said the song is solid. It feels silly in a good way as the vocalist exaggerates his voice on this song.
“Nightly Days” is melodic with one of the most impressive vocal performances. There's a lot of range from the vocalist. “Just Allude” is darker than the other songs while the closer “Loosen Up” sounds like the title.
Mhostly Ghostly is off to a great start in my opinion. The band seems to be having fun and it comes across in their music. Looking forward to where this young group goes from here.
