I’ve always thought color and setting was a good way to explain what music can feel like. The latest release from Michael Klug entitled Making A Safe Path Counts For Something certainly seems like that. He explains, “The overall mood of the EP is a summer night around sunset, that sleepy, warm secure feeling mixed with a calm awareness that the black unknown of night is ever encroaching.”
I thought that was a great description but I’m not sure how sleepy this music made me. Take for instance the opener “Unhappy Endings” which is a great song. The song starts off with a hypnotic groove and gets more intense as it progresses. There are airy vocals and there really is this sense you might start to sweat. It felt like the beginning of a rave. That being said, the music is calm and serene but somehow also has a lot of energy to it.
Up next is “Go Easy On Me” which is more lush and even more hypnotic in some ways. The music relies on arpeggiated patterns and ethereal elements. It’s very dream-like including the vocals that are blended into the music in a way which makes them seem more like other elements than a focal point.
The centerpiece is “Narrow” which displays Klug’ ability to sway back and forth between ambient landscapes and kinetic patterns. It’s a great track and more cerebral and darker than the previous songs.
The closer “You Don't Have To Be Alone” is the first track that puts the vocals front and center. I liked the change in approach and was reminded of an artist like Majical Cloudz both in terms of mood and lyrics.
Klug is a musician I’ve been familiar with for a long time and he has evolved in the best of ways as an artist. There is no doubt about me and this release is his best yet. Take a listen.
