London, Ontario rock band Midnight Son met at Fanshawe college. They balanced academia while composing their first EP entitled Vol. 1. The EP mixes pop rock, punk, and a bit of grunge. The six track EP tackles themes that rock music does best: sex, love, and pain. The most consistent theme on Vol. 1 is freedom in its various forms. Take for instance the opener "Shake It Down" which represents sexual liberations and everything that comes with it. The song is a bit flirty. Lead singer Andrew Zamora sings lyrics such as "shake it down girl, show me how that body works" in this catchy song. "Living Underground" is more or less straight pop punk/emo. It contains a lot of the staples of the genres including the general theme of existential doubt. On the chorus Zamora sings "How hard it is to find your place in the world. How hard it is to feel like you deserve". "Another Round" is an anthemic song that is arguably the most commercially viable song on the album. I could see kids near and far singing along to this one. "Heart and Soul" offers up the opposite ideal of "Shake It Down." It's about unconditional love. It's the closest song Vol. 1 has to a ballad. "No Regrets" keeps the high energy nature but has a dark tone about addiction and depression. These songs stand out the most for their varying beats and creative lyrics. Overall, Midnight Son's entire EP is full of guitar riffs and bold vocals, but it also executes tender moments of calmness quite well. "Heart and Soul" highlights the most successful usage of calm and harsh sounds. Midnight Son's Vol. 1 balances discussing serious and lighthearted issues, while maintaining fast beats. This is a truly impressive accomplishment. Midnight Son has an undeniable energy that will capture the attention of audiences.
