Not many people were born with a bass guitar in their hands but MILHE was. A couple of decades earlier in the ‘80s MILHE was playing bass in bands that did original material. After taking a sabbatical to raise a family he returned to the scene playing bass in Darkroom and No Exit. At some point he started writing his own material, which became Shake the dust and dirt off.
Shake the dust and dirt off is a six-song EP featuring pop/rock songs. MILHE isn’t breaking any barriers but certainly delivers catchy songs that are easy on the ears. Things begin with the title track, which does contain an ‘80s rock aesthetic. The music could be considered soft rock in a number of ways. MILHE impresses with lead guitar work that isn’t overly technically complicated and simply serves the song. I enjoyed the first song but the second song entitled “Let me be the one” is a highlight. The vocal melody and delivery is exceptional on this track. He sings, “You never look back / It’s a matter of fact.” I was actually reminded of The Beatles on this track. He continues with “Behave” which revolves around warm lead guitar, drums, bass and another solid vocal performance while “Lied” is a slightly funky yet heavy song. “Are you doing the right thing” is a forward moving song that is perfect for car rides. The other highlight was “I'm here for you” which was a slower, acoustic song featuring some organ. I actually preferred MILHE with the distortion off but I think that is arguable. Either way there aren’t any real duds. Shake the dust and dirt off is an easy listen and certainly has enough here for his fans to be anticipating a full-length. Whether that is going to happen is unknown but I hope it happens sooner than later.
