Mindseed
self-released; 2014

3.5 out of 5

By Jerrica Tisdale

Mindseed, a Calgary, Alberta band, hopes to use their spiritual and humanitarian ideologies to shape the world. They want to expand the boundaries of art. Last year, Mindseed released their self-titled EP Mindseed. Mindseed's sound blends rock, grunge, pop and even a bit of bluegrass, to form a highly energetic compilation.

The tapestry of the Mindseed EP contains an assortment of catchy beats and poetic lyrics. The album discusses everything from love to war. It fearlessly questions society, appreciates naturalism and dreams of the great beyond.

Every story on Mindseed represents both personal and global implications. They represent general ideals of love and pain, but also worldly views on life, death and hope. Every song contains some admirable efforts. However, "Perception,” "Skin," Olive Tree," "Fathom This...," and "Eggshells" are our favorite songs, both for their instrumental depth and lyrical freedoms.

"Perception’s” haunting tones create a dark, grunge sound. It is the most musically experimental song on the album: it utilizes everything from synthesizers to layered voice effects. Their perspective on reincarnation gives it a unique angle. "Skin" balances the album by offering a subtle, somber sound. The track's semi-ballad style gives Mindseed its most personal touch.

"Olive Tree" creates tragically, beautiful imagery. We feel the destructive nature of global and domestic wars in this track. "Fathom This..." has the most relatable message. It emphasizes the importance of following your heart and dreams. It also offers up one of the most easily sing-along tracks. "Eggshells" best captures the overall themes and styles of Mindseed: blazing beats and provocative lyrics.

The Mindseed EP allows us to explore the world's greatest mysteries. The lyrics create beautifully riveting stories and the tracks' catchy beats allow the songs' marketability. Mindseed creates the appropriate equilibrium of catchy sounds and stimulating stories. Their album displays the band's musical intelligence and heart.
